The Birth Bed, from “The Jug of Tears”, 1926, lithographPainter, pastellist, lithographer, and caricaturist, Abel Pann was born to a religious family in Dvinsk. His father was a Rabbi and head of a Yeshiva. Pann showed interest in art from an early age and went on to study in Odessa, Vienna, and Paris. He came to Palestine in 1913, but soon left for Paris, traveled to the United States, and in 1920 returned to Palestine, where he eventually settled. There he executed his chief work, the Bible in pictures, for which he employed local Oriental types to depict Biblical characters. He was one of the first teachers at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem.
