Herrings, oil on cardboard mounted on canvas Gustave Loiseau was a self-taught artist. At the age of twenty, he began painting watercolor copies of popular prints. Starting in 1890, Loiseau spent a few summers with Gauguin in the countryside of Pont-Aven, but his own work from this period shows no influence of Gauguin's "syntheticism." In 1895, he adopted Impressionist techniques.
