épine was a self-taught painter whose art developed under the influence of Corot and Daubigny. He was one of the first French artists to paint directly from nature. He was especially attracted to the banks of the Seine and its tributaries. Lépine's attention to light and atmosphere anticipate Impressionism, although his light brushwork and soft coloring are far removed from the Impressionist's bold approach to color.
