Maternity, Woman and Child, oil on canvasEugène Carrière, a French painter and lithographer, studied under Alexandre Cabanel at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He painted maternity themes and portraits, and made decorative pictures. Carrière's aim was to express a superior reality, the world of ideas, by using the smallest possible number of lines and colors. In his lifetime, he enjoyed success as his works attracted literary-minded spectators.
