Henri (Chaim) Epstein

Born in Lodz, Poland (1891-?)

In December 2007, we received the following information regarding the painting "Young Woman." The source of the information was Jean Paul Duc from Epernon, France and Jacqueline Muller (the daughter of Geneviève Dideron):

Henri Epstein – or Chaim – was born in Lodz (1892 or 3) and died in Auschwitz in 1944. He lived in Epernon, before being sent to Auschwitz. The portrait of the woman in the painting "Young Woman" is of the sculptor Geneviève Dideron, the daughter of his wife from her previous marriage to the painter Georges Dorignac.

The photos from the family album show Georges Dorignac, the father of Geneviève, his wife, Suzanne, the first on the right, and their daughters. Geneviève is in the middle. On the stairs, Suzanne, his wife, is at the top and Geneviève is standing in front of her. The other girls are her sisters. One of them married A. Hebuterne (Modigliani) and the second one married the sculptor Damboise. Damboise and Dideron (the husband of Geneviève) are both members of the Academy of the Arts.
